.... Is how The Times described the film "A Single Man" and I have to agree. The directorial debut by Tom Ford was ripped into by some for being merely style over substance. Not a particular devotee of Ford the man, or his work with Gucci, I went to see this with some trepidation on Valentine's night, at the Gate Cinema at Notting Hill.
With obvious nods to Wong Kar Wai's "in The Mood For Love", Ford directs an incredibly stylish and moving portrait of grief and a life slowly falling apart.
I was a bit suspect about Colin Firth - a man I've only associated before with "Americanised English" dramas - a sort of poor man's Hugh Grant.... Was I surprised! An impeccable and intense performance countered by Julianne Moore as his unhappy, damaged and lonely best friend
Also a stunning example of period interiors styling - I loved the juxtaposition of Firth's character's masculine Mid-Century modernist interior with Julianne Moore's character's 'Hollywood Regency' style interior. His is all sparse, moody, Scandi minimalism, whilst hers is a cream-carpeted, gilt-edged, chinoiserie confection....
The house used for Firth's character is by architect John Lautner, who had worked as an apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright.
Definitely top of my Christmas list this year...

Always In The Mood For Love........
..... It's been 10 years, this year, since it was made, but Wong Kar Wai's "In The Mood For Love" still remains the most beautiful and stylish film I've ever seen.
Beautifully shot, with the most incredible detail in costume (Maggie Cheung's dresses are astounding) and period details, with the most gorgeous soundtrack.
The art direction is superb.... I love the wallpaper in the hotel room scenes.
Happy 10th Anniversary to In The Mood For Love.....

The Living Room....
This year, I decided to decorate the living room.
Six years ago, when we moved in, the living room was a violent shade of Violet. Not gothic purple- I could go with that - but a vomit-inducing bright purple shade. Complete with silver wooden alcove shelves. And parquet floor & skirtings stained 'Tango Orange'. And stripped pine doors which didn't close properly. Not to mention the ceiling - which 4 summers ago we had finally saved up enough money to get a plasterer to sort out. After the removal of several layers of Artex, wooden baton beams and possible Asbestos - the ceiling was freshly plastered. I quickly painted the walls a neutral colour and then stopped. Other rooms took priority - the bedroom, Kitchen, bathroom and dressing room. Even the garden got sorted. So this year it was finally time to 'do' the Living Room.
We had already sanded back the floor and re-varnished in Dark Walnut. My first purchase was a gorgeous 1930's modernist chandelier from The Old Cinema antiques in Chiswick. The perfect combination of deco-modern design with a bit of glimmering crystal.
Colour for the walls was easy - I knew I wanted a 'Vert Noir' shade - the darkest green possible. This turned out to be Farrow & Ball's Studio Green. The ceiling was painted pale grey to add subtle contrast.
A furious ebay price negotiation got me a fabulous brown leather Art Deco Day-bed. We already had a green/brown sofa in a mid-century modern style, an original 1950's Bamboo bar and a Zebrano wood console table from Heals.
We rescued two original interior doors from a neighbours skip - so they replaced the horrid 1980's stripped pine doors. I also managed to source some original 1930's Deco British door handles.
Changing the radiator for an old "School" radiator was the trickiest job.The old and new copper piping would not weld together without springing leaks. My poor dad had to redo the whole thing three times and it took a whole day!
My favourite purchase of all has been the Moooi Oblique bookcase in dark wood by the genius designer Marcel Wanders - just so simple & perfect!
It's still very much 'in progress' - we still have to create a rock wall on the chimney-breast wall - but it's getting there!!

Go away "Greige"
I went out with some fashion folk recently and every female in the group had adorned her fingers with "Greige" nail polish ...Already I am bored with this.... so I'm looking forward to Illamasqua's new Autumn/Winter colours - especially the nail polish in "Viridian", a deep metallic green.....

Softly, Softly....
How utterly soft & gorgeous does this sweater look?
I'm loving this sweater by Jena.Theo from their Autumn/Winter 10 collection. The duo won last year's Fashion Fringe and their Autumn/Winter collection was inspired by Marlene Dietrich, Ginger Rogers and Charlie Chaplin - lots of fluid feminine draping and sultry insouciance. I love the super-high waist, super-wide pants that complete the look, too. I eagerly await their Spring/ Summer show, but for now, I definitely love this season's look....

I Just Might Die....
.. After several years that were too "Ethnic", "Tribal" or just too bonkers for my taste, Jean Paul Gaultier has created the most exquisite Couture collection for A/W 10...
.
Shown in Paris last week - it could have done without the gimmicky strip-tease appearance by Dita Von Teese - looks to die for were topped off with fabulous, high turbans. The collection was stunning - these are just a few of my favourite looks. I absolutely adore looks 2, 3 and 5. JPG, you are back on form at long last...

Making an entrance...
A hallway is the entrance to your home. For most people it ends up as a space cluttered with bikes, coats, shoes and random "stuff". Not for me... I wanted no clutter. My hallway is basically a staircase with a tiny square landing at the top. Most people would paint it white to make it "look bigger". I wanted to celebrate it's smallness. There is little or no natural light..so I wanted to embrace that. I used Farrow & Ball's off black all over - ceiling, walls & woodwork. The 1920's Glass doorknobs came from an old house in Maine, USA (very Stephen King) and the glass keyhole escutcheons and mirror glass fingerplates are 1930's French. I think a hallway should give an idea of the feel of the rooms that lie behind the doors .... This is mine.....

The Coburg Bar
Hmmm... maybe it's the dark wood??? After 3 years or so, my love affair with the wonderful Coburg has not waned. It's still my second favourite place for a cocktail. I like the way the cocktail menu is divided into the decades that the cocktails were created. My good friend Tim Perkins absolutely had to have a "Marlene Dietrich" even though it's whiskey based and he hates whiskey! Me? You'll find me somewhere between the 1920's - 30's......
Something Wicked This Way Comes....
Video of the shoot by Paul Rowland for V magazine August 2009 "Nocturnal habits/ Supreme Women". I adore the styling by Nicholas Grasa - macabre and terrifyingly beautiful....
